About Signal

Clarity over noise.
Judgement over
performance.

A practitioner led space for security leaders who would rather have one honest conversation than attend ten good looking ones.

Why Signal exists

Most security spaces are built for the wrong people.

Signal was founded by Vin Marc Maguire, a CISO and Fractional CISO who has spent his career on every side of this problem.

Most optimise for sponsors rather than participants. Most communities chase activity rather than understanding. Most advisory arrives wrapped in a framework rather than grounded in experience.

Signal is the alternative. It brings security leaders together in a way that feels real. No hype, no theatre, no noise. Just honest conversation, practical insight, and perspective earned by doing the job.

It reconnects security leadership with the people and the thinking that actually change outcomes.

What we believe

Four things we hold to.

Trust is the scarcest resource in cybersecurity

It cannot be bought, and a saturated channel cannot manufacture it. It is built slowly, in small rooms, by people who keep their word.

Context beats best practice

The same control is right in one organisation and wrong in another. What travels is the reasoning, not the recommendation.

Independence has to be structural

Stating it is easy. Signal states it, publishes it, and answers to an Advisory Board drawn from the profession rather than from its partners.

The profession owes the people entering it

A community that only speaks to its own leadership stops learning. Signal makes deliberate room for people on the way up.

The founder

Vin Marc Maguire

A CISO and Fractional CISO whose career has spanned technology sales leadership, cybersecurity consulting, executive security leadership and strategic advisory work.

Building the businesses

He founded Sec-1, one of the UK's early specialist penetration testing consultancies, later acquired by Claranet. From Sec-1 came AppCheck, which he helped create and grow. Alongside that work he contributed to the early development of CREST.

Sitting in the chair

He later led cybersecurity as CISO within a £400 million utilities organisation, helping build the security foundations that supported its growth beyond £1 billion. He has since conducted more than a hundred cybersecurity maturity assessments, and continues to advise organisations as a Fractional CISO.

Across every role, one pattern kept repeating

Organisations rarely struggled because they lacked technology. They struggled because trusted conversations were too difficult to find.

Signal was created to solve that problem. Everything on this site follows from that one observation, including the parts that make it harder to grow quickly.
